The Heartwood School (of the Timber Framer’s Guild) hosts two 3-week long intensive timber framing workshops each year, focused on the fundamentals of using hand tools to cut a traditional timber frame. Together we lay out and cut the entire frame from the floor system to the rafters, learn to sharpen and care for our tools, and study some of the rich history of American timber framing under the expertise of author and architect Jack Sobon. This class always builds the same 14’x20’ gable timber frame with a 8’ lean-to on one side, and we raise the frame inside our classroom which is the former timber framing shop of Bensonwood in Alstead, New Hampshire.
