Compound Joinery

This yearly class focuses on the fundamentals of hip and valley roof framing, otherwise known as “compound joinery.” I often start the class having each student make a small model, and then we move on to cut a full scale roof together as a class. In 2024 we cut a simple hip roof, which essentially means a 4-sided pyramid. The frame changes from year to year, but the curriculum is always focused on the unique geometry challenges of hip and valley roof systems in heavy timber.
