This trestle was a culmination of my studies in linear stereotomy at the Professional School of Practical Stereotomy, founded by Patrick Moore. What is stereotomy? Learn more about it here.

Stereotomy Trestle

Montpelier VT, 2024

The purpose of this project was to demonstrate my mastery of a technique called stereotomy, an ancient hand-drafting technique that computes intricate geometry without the use of numeric calculation. The form of a “trestle” (a.k.a a sawhorse) is a classic vehicle for studying stereotomy in French carpentry. The layout for each piece in the model was solved using lines, projection, and proportion within my 2-D drawing. Each part’s layout was then directly transferred off the drawing and onto the wood, without the use of numeric measurement. I cut all the parts with hand tools, and assembled the trestle in a sequence of 7 glue-ups. You can read more about my studies in stereotomy through the link above.
